A park that feels fine at noon can feel very different after sunset, and women make that call every day with almost no information. I wanted that information to come from the women who actually use these spaces.
I joined in Grade 9 as a researcher, interviewing 100+ women about street lighting. As project lead I moved the focus to parks. With 14 volunteers, I surveyed 600+ women about 9 of Jaipur's main parks at three times of day, scored each park on lighting, footfall, visibility and lived experience, and put the scores on a live map that updates with every visit.
Eight PGs and resident welfare associations have adopted the map, reaching 2,000+ women, and the project has been endorsed by the Mayor of Jaipur. My next step is getting the findings to the people who can fix lighting, patrols and upkeep.
